I HATE GUNS!!!
Close to midnight on May 24, 2022, I wrote on E Jean's post:
E Jean, I HATE guns! I am demoralized and disgusted that Congress will not pass legislation to require background checks and restrict AR-15 type guns.
I feel sorry for the young students who have to live with the memories of this day. As they get older, the COLD/INHUMANE adults will tell them that they have to "learn" to deal with their trauma that the ADULTS elected to the Texas legislature allowed to happen so they can amass power and money to feed their egos and keep violent businesses happy. How SAD!
I do not understand anger that results in hatred residing in a gun-killer person.
I understand that this gun-killer hatred anger is anti-music at every level of human existence.
If it were up to me, I would repeal the 2nd Amendment, which is never going to happen. So:
(I had music class in early (private) grade school, maybe in kindergarten, too.)
Even though I would like to make the conclusion that music not being taught in some elementary schools may be a contributing factor to teenage gunmen, I may not be able to say this because, without the physical gun, the anger hatred cannot be turn into a mass casualty nightmare. He bought the first AR-15 rifle one (1) day after his birthday.
Here is how music may help bullying.
Why are schools cutting music programs? says:
“Numerous studies have found that involvement in music programs from an early age can help hone motor, language, and communications skills, as well as influence brain plasticity. One study showed students who took four years of art and music courses scored over 90 points higher on the SAT compared to students who took one semester or less. Music can also lead to positive social bonds among peers, increased confidence, and a sense of responsibility. It also provides an outlet for creative expression.”
I Googled, "does music affect bullied students" and several of the results were:
How Can Music Therapy Help Create a Bully-Free Culture?, which says:
‘ A 2013 study by K Shafer and colleagues found that music therapy can be used successfully to prevent bullying and intervene when it has already occurred. The study, which focused on gender-based bullying, showed that exposing bullies and victims to music and interaction mediated by instruments help reduce negative dynamics within a group. In this case, for instance, participants were exposed to ‘feminine-masculine’ types of music and instruments. Relationships and self-management both saw significant improvements. Another study by A dos Santos showed that simply listening to pop music in a group and using the songs as a springboard for discussion provided adolescents with a familiar topic to discuss. Through music, the scientists said, adolescents “can enter a space where their ‘habits’ have a place. It is their expressive territory.” ‘
Music Therapy Interventions For Bullies And Bullying Victims, says:
“Shafer & Silverman point out that the goal of these music therapy activities is to apply them to real life situations so the bullies and victims can utilize the learned skills in everyday life. Music therapy may be successful with students involved with bullying because music is accessible and enjoyed by most adolescents.”
Since music in schools may reduce bullying and increase brain-plasticity (critical thinking abilities and self-esteem), I guess republicans will ban music in schools, too.
Thanks for that info about the effects of music, Caroline--it gives me hope of a possible remedy for the bullying if not the guns. I think Heather Cox Richardson is right that the 2nd Amendment does not in any way support our current, insane gun free-for-all.
